I created illustrations for the Cinderella story, as told from German, Italian and Russian story traditions. The German version is called “Ashenpüttel,” the Italian called “Cenerentola,” and the Russian called “Vasilisa the Beautiful.” I was fascinated to see this story brought up into these different European cultures, and to see how similar they were, but to also noticed how they’ve been molded and inlaid with their different cultural traditions. Oil on gessoed paper.
